Over the last several weeks we have seen the growth of sea weed that has prevented navigation and impeded the efficiency of outboards. After reviewing multiple options we have found an effective solution to eliminate the sea weed from our harbor area. Yesterday we conducted the initial trial of a tool which cuts the weed at the bed of the lake. The trial area was the launch area for the daysailers which was so severe boats could not move through the area along the shore. The tool we have is simply thrown out into the water and drawn back to shore using a rope pulling with a jerking motion. The two blades on the tool are razor sharp and can clear a path about 60 inches wide when the blade are set at their maximum width. The sea weed is drawn up on shore and allowed to dry before it is disposed of. A large area of sea weed can be cleared within a couple of hours of work. The intent is to clear the sea weed out of our harbor area over the next couple of weeks. We are waiting on a second tool which will float on the surface to remove any floating weeds that remain. The second tool is on backorder and will not be available until the first week of August.
We are looking for a few people who would be willing to on this project to enhance the function and appearance of the shoreline. Working on this project can be done on your schedule and can be a done a couple hours at a time. There would some very brief training and we would schedule each person to a specific area and time so that the tool is available. The work does require lifting up to about 40 pounds of seaweed out of the water on the tool with each pass. You will get a bit wet and gloves are recommended for removing the sea weed off the tool. If you would like to volunteer for working on this project please let me know.
