About

Muncie Sailing Club is a member-governed club. We proudly strive to maintain a very affordable club to maximize the pleasure of sailing for all. Members participate in keeping the club operating smoothly and clean up after themselves. In the spring, members gather to prepare the docks and grounds for the season. Members can earn credits towards the next year’s membership by participating in scheduled activities.

The club is administered by a Board of Directors. Each year, one third of the directors roll off and new members are elected for a three-year term.

The club was founded in 1961 and incorporated in 1963 as an Indiana non-profit social club for the purpose of promoting sailing on Prairie Creek Reservoir. Initially there were very active racing programs with many small boats in similar classes. Over the years the Club has evolved into a high quality sailing facility thanks to the generosity of many individual sailors who continue to donate their time, talent, and labor to maintaining and improving the Club.

Construction of the stream-fed Prairie Creek reservoir began in 1954. The reservoir and surrounding property are owned by the Indiana-American Water Co. and leased to the City of Muncie, who in turn subleases the harbor, land, and clubhouse to the Muncie Sailing Club. Under the terms of the agreement, the Muncie Park Department provides basic services such as lawn mowing, trash removal, and police protection. Muncie Sailing Club is responsible for all enhancements and maintenance of facilities, ensuring a quality sailing club on Prairie Creek.

The reservoir and park include approximately 1,275 acres of water and 750 acres of land. The east side of the reservoir is managed for recreation, such as boating, picnicking, and camping, while the west side is managed for green space, horse trails, and an “all-terrain vehicles” area in the southeast.

Club Events

Muncie Sailing Club offers a varied, family-oriented social program. In fact, we have a number of “social” members who do not currently sail but enjoy the Club’s social events and take advantage of our Clubhouse and park-like picnic facilities.

The Vice-Commodore/Social Chairman organizes a calendar of social, sailing, and work events for the year at the beginning of the sailing season.

Social events consist of a variety of activities that are available to all members and their guests. Club Members are, at times, asked to contribute a pitch-in dish. Social events are scheduled throughout the sailing season and over the winter off season.

Social events begin with the Spring Banquet and continue through early fall. Enjoy our traditional events: Memorial Day Breakfast, 4th of July Hamburger/Hot Dog Grill, Labor Day grill, and Harbor Dance.

Sailing Events — Sailing events typically include sailing-in-concert, full moon sails, raft-ups and any other event a members chooses to lead.

Workday Events — Work and Dock Day events generally occur at the beginning and end of the sailing season.

Private Events

Members may host private events at the Muncie Sailing Club, such as a family reunion, birthday party, etc. To prevent scheduling conflicts and overcrowding, members are encouraged to coordinate these through the Vice Commodore. Please use the Club Reservation form listed on the Members Login page.

Please note that reserving a date for a private event does not give you exclusive use of the facilities. Other members may also use the facilities at the same time but should do so with courtesy.

The individual(s) responsible for the event, or another designated MSC member, shall be on the property for the duration of the event. The guests are expected to leave all facilities in the same condition or better than when they arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t know how to sail but want to learn. Can anyone at the club teach me?

We don’t have an official instruction program. But, we have several members who would volunteer their time to give you the basic fundamentals then take you out on the water for an afternoon. If you have your own boat, they would love to “crew” with you to share their skills.

Do I need to own a sailboat to join?

No. Buying a boat can be a large decision so make sure if sailing is something you really want to do. Besides, what size boat will you need?

Plan to visit first to see if you would enjoy the club and sailing. Weekends are probably best and you may be able to “crew” with a member. Once you become a member, you’ll have access to any of the three small sailboats that the club maintains.

Can I visit with my own boat?
In order to promote sailing and recognize the reciprocal benefits of USSA members, the Muncie Sailing Club welcomes all USSA members who wish to bring a boat and launch from the club facilities for personal recreational purposes. Such guests must show respect for the club facilities and not interfere with access by Club members. Unless special provisions are made with the Harbormaster, a transient guest boat is only allowed short-term, daytime docking privileges. Boats have to be removed overnight and parked in the designated parking area. Visiting boats cannot exceed 25 feet in length. The maximum stay is 14 days.
Do you have space for my sailboat?

Yes. We offer in-the-water slips for boats not to exceed 27 ft. L.O.A. with less than a 9’. 4” beam and 5000 lb. displacement or less. For “dry-sailors”, there’s an asphalt area for small boats and an upper grassy area for larger boats.

How do I get my boat in the water?

We have a private, secured concrete ramp that can accomadate both swing and full keel boats. There’s also a wheeled hitch extension available for deep keel boats.

How do I join?

Complete the “Request for Membership” form now.

If I join can I bring guests?

Guests and family are permitted on club premises, but must be accompanied by a club member.

What about racing opportunities?

Our Racing/Regatta Chairperson is responsible for managing the program each season for the membership. The racing/regatta calendar includes both competitive and non-competitive racing and sailing events.

Can I bring my powerboat or jetski?

Sorry, but no. The Muncie Sailing Club is strictly sail.
