We have two training programs that will be conducted in the weeks ahead. The first training program is is “Proper Use  Of a Marine Radio” and the second training program is “Basic Sailing Skills”. Over the last few seasons we have seen a growing need to be able to communicate from vessel to vessel to address a safety situation. Cell phones are great but most of us put our cell phones away while on the water and service is sometimes spotty. For on the water communication a marine radio offers a quick and easy method of communication and allows for a broadcast of a vessel in distress. While many of us have a radio on our boat it is usually not turned on and many have never received proper training on the use of a marine radio to make it effective. This training provides you with the rules for operating a marine radio as well as the proper procedures for emergency and non emergency use of the radio. The radio program is a one hour program and a handout will be provided.

The second program is a basic sailing skills program. This program consists of 4 weeks of classroom training to present terminology, basic principles of sailing, simple navigation, basic knots and safety. Once the classroom sessions are completed there will be on the water training. These sessions will be scheduled based on instructor and student availability. During the on the water sessions there will be no more than 3 students on a vessel to allow for proper time on the tiller as well as time as a crew member. During the on the water sessions you will be instructed with the proper terminology to direct a crew. This program will provide you with the knowledge necessary to sail on US Coast Guard controlled waters.

If you have an interest in either of these programs please respond to this email specifying which program you are signing up for and in the case of the radio program specify which date you are signing up for. The radio class requires only on class while the basic skills class is a minimum 4 weeks. We need your RSVP so that we can have the proper number of handouts.
