Labor Day – September 1st

It looks like we’ll have great weather on Labor Day! If you haven’t signed up yet — you still have until Friday to RSVP for the Labor Day meal and activities. Click here: Labor Day Picnic – Signup. The signup link provides feedback to you about who is bringing what (appetizer, salad, dessert) and more importantly it helps us plan for the amount of meat we need to buy and to minimize waste. This signup capability is easy and will be used for most events going forward.

Monday, we’ll have a raft-up, sail parade, and free sail time along with a good meal. The sail parade will be after the raft-up and is a tribute to a long time MSC friend, Alan Hokenson who recently passed away. Thank you, Al for your years of work helping make MSC what it is today.

I hope everyone can make it on Monday!

House and Grounds

While you’re out at the club, look at the new flagpole by the parking area. We had a broken pole and safety concerns with the old one. The board decided to take care of it rather than wait until next year. It looks great with the new flag. Thanks, Jerry Priddy for your help on this.

Enjoy your club. Our beach has new sand (in case you didn’t know) and thank you everyone (especially Sherry Pace) for the beautiful flowers and landscaping. The passion for the sailing club is demonstrated by members in so many ways.

Docks, Boats and Motors

The motor on the picket boat has a new carb and runs like a top. The O’Day had a leak which has been fixed. The donated Snipe has been in the process of being re-rigged. It has been a series of ups and downs as the boat is a non-standard snipe leading to hard to find parts and work scheduling challenges. I’m still optimistic we’ll get it in the water soon.

Dock day will be coming up in October. In addition to the standard Dock Day work, we will be looking at some additional critical work that has to be done (preferably this year) before the water gets cold, We’ll be asking for help as this gets further planned.

Prairie Creek/Parks and Recreation

The Prairie Creek Reservoir is a stand-alone Muncie Park that receives no tax dollars from the City. As a result, it is self-funded through various user fees (including all of our boat/kayak stickers). They are facing many budget uncertainties as a result of the Water Company Review and may have to limit their dock and campsite numbers which would reduce their income. The pricing model is still being worked on. I’m negotiating to keep our fees where they are as we receive minimal services from Prairie Creek. We are self-insured, pay for our own electricity, maintain our own water/sewer and facilities, buy and maintain our own floating docks etc. I’ll keep you posted.

Member Responsibilities

This is our club and key to our low cost is related to us taking care of it ourselves. To have the work done that we do ourselves every year would easily add thousands of dollars to our budget (increasing membership fees). We need to exercise diligence and take responsibility for what we have.

Here are a few issues that have been found:

  • A fire was burning in the firepit, and no one was around – PUT IT OUT.
  • The Dock house door was loose (not closed and locked) leaving it open to members kayaks and club assets.
  • The lock combinations were set to the open code. After unlocking, immediately scramble the code so when it is locked it is not the open code.
  • Kayak and boat stickers need to be properly displayed to show compliance and ownership.
  • An ice locker was left unlocked (lock open) The ice is reserved for club events and casual use by ice club members.
  • If something is in the refrigerator, it doesn’t mean anyone can use it. Feel free to use appropriate space in the basement refrigerator(s). Upstairs is used more for events.

That’s it for now. Enjoy MSC.
